Engage with Your Audience
We have spoken extensively about the importance of networking with other bloggers in your vertical. However, if you want to keep your audience coming back for more time and time again, it is important to keep the conversation going with them as well. Remember that in the days of social media and instant communication, readers expect that their blog offers are going to take their concerns and considerations into account. They want to have a “live” experience with you, not have you be an unreachable author on a pedestal.
One of the most important things you can do is be around to answer questions on your blog. Again, this is a good way to make use of your analytics. Study the times of day when your blog gets the most traffic. This is a good time for you to post and then be around to interact with comments in real time if necessary. Anybody who comments on your blog should get a courteous and friendly response. Even if your response is merely “thanks!” this can make a world of difference.
Also, be open to friendly critique or suggestions. Especially if you are running your blog as a one-person operation, it will not be unusual for you to sometimes make typos or other small mistakes. If a commenter on your blog posts out grammatical or factual errors, make sure to thank them for their eagle eyes and then adjust your blog post accordingly with credit. People are more likely to come back to your blog and keep engaging with you if you create an environment of open conversation.
Social media is also extremely important in this. Many people who interact with you on social media will be your readers, not other bloggers. If one of your readers mentioned you in their social media, make sure to take the time to give them a shout out. On some social media platforms, you can even private message people. This is a great way to personally thank individuals for interacting with your content and turn them into loyal readers.
Another way to encourage people to interact with your content is to offer contests or other fun activities. Many high-ranking brands use this to great aplomb, particularly on picture-heavy social media sites like Instagram. If people are participating in your contests with pictures, you can feature those pictures on your main social media platform, the more fun and interactive your brand persona is on social media, the more likely it is that people are going to follow you back and eventually find their way to your blog.
Another wonderful way to interact with your audience is to simply ask them what they want. In your blog, you can occasionally set up polls or other interactive devices to learn more about what your audience specifically wants to read about. People love to be asked their opinions; take advantage of this.
If you are a blogger who proves responsive, informative, and entertaining, people are going to keep coming back again and again. Remember that your content isn’t just about the information that you spread, it is also about the person who is providing the content.
